Solar system maintenance

Maintenance is mostly looking, comparing, and knowing when to stop. It is not a weekend of opening covers. Generation that quietly falls is the usual clue.

A practical routine

  • Generation

Note the inverter's daily energy on a sunny day and on a dull day. A sudden drop on a clear day is more useful than a single number with no history.

  • Visual check from a safe place

Look for cracked glass, a new shadow from a tank or a neighbour's floor, slipped modules, and cables hanging free. Do not climb an unsafe edge to get a closer look.

  • Cables and connectors

From the ground or a safe walkway, look for scorched connectors, chewed insulation, and joints sitting in water.

  • Structure

Rust at cut ends, loose clamps, and a terrace stain under a bolt are the items to photograph and report.

  • Protection devices

A breaker that is off, a surge device flag that has changed colour, or an earth link that is disconnected needs a qualified person. Do not reset a repeated trip by holding the breaker in.

How often

Dusty weeks in central India may need the cleaning guide more often than a clean coastal roof. A visual look once a month, and a more careful visit after a storm or after other people have worked on the roof, is a sensible household rhythm. It is not a statutory interval.

The inverter manual may ask for a service interval. Follow that manual. This page does not replace it.

Warning signs

  • Inverter dark on a sunny afternoon

It may be a grid outage, a trip, or a fault. Check whether the neighbourhood has power before assuming the solar has failed. Do not open the cover.

  • Burning smell or brown connector

Isolate only if you have been shown the safe isolator and you can reach it without climbing. Otherwise leave it and call.

  • Bill suddenly unchanged after months of credit

The meter arrangement or the export permission may have stalled. That is a utility question as well as a technical one.

Safety

Do not open the inverter, the DC board, or a connector while the sun is on the modules. Do not wash and inspect electrics at the same time. Height work needs a stable way onto the roof, not a chair.

Maintenance questions

How often should the system be serviced?

Follow the inverter manual and look monthly for obvious damage. There is no single legal interval on this page.

Can I tighten clamps myself?

Only if you can do it from a safe place without unloading a module or opening a connector. Otherwise it is a service visit.

The generation is lower in June than in March. Is it broken?

Not by itself. Cloud, heat, and a different sun path change the month. Compare a clear day with an earlier clear day before assuming a fault.
